WALES MUST HAVE CONTROL OVER NATURAL RESOURCES POTENTIAL

WE SHOULD BE ALLOWED TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF CROWN ESTATE TO MAKE OUR NATION RICHER AND GREENER

Plaid Cymru’s Jonathan Edwards MP has called for the Welsh Government to take control of the Crown Estate in Wales, as the Estate today announced a 9% increase in its profits in the last financial year despite the wider economy barely growing across the UK.

The Crown Estate has urban, rural and marine holdings across the UK, including the seabed and large areas of land, profiting from renewable energy developments and off-shore dredging.

Mr Edwards, Member of Parliament for Carmarthen East and Dinefwr, also called for the Crown Estate to publish transparent figures about their level of investment and profit in Wales.

Mr Edwards said:

“The role of the Crown Estate in Wales is very important, not as a profit making body, but because they own much of the land and sea-waters which are possibly even more profit making for the Welsh people.

“The Crown Estate owns the seabed around Wales which can be used to develop tidal energy and other renewable energy sources, as well as large parts of land in Wales.

“Offshore this year alone in the UK, they made £15.5m from dredging activities, £14.3m from what they call coastal activities, £11.5m from cables and pipelines and a further £3.5m from renewable resources. Alongside that, they have nearly £600m of offshore property.

“Sadly, this isn’t broken down any further so that we can see exactly where these activities are taking place and what use they are making of Welsh waters and land.

“There should be transparent figures about the holdings and profits of the Crown Estate in Wales so that we can see what is earned from our resources and then given to the Treasury in Westminster.

“The land and energy resources of Wales should profit the people of Wales.

“We have the opportunity to be world leaders when it comes to renewable energy, creating thousands of jobs, making money through research and development and re-investing in our economy for future years.

“Sadly, resource ownership and this kind of forward thinking is something which Labour did not touch when in Government in Westminster and yet another issue on which the London led parties are being left well behind.”
