Jonathan & Rhodri support National Bookstart Week

Local Assembly Member Rhodri Glyn Thomas and Member of Parliament Jonathan Edwards joined babies and toddlers in Ammanford Library today to help promote National Bookstart Week 2011.

The annual celebration of Bookstart, National Bookstart Day, has for the first time been extended to a whole week, from Monday 6 to Sunday 12 June 2011. More than 5,000 transport and journey-themed events, storytelling, singing and rhyming sessions have been taking place across the country in libraries, children’s centres and bookshops.

Bookstart aims to help every child in Wales, England and Northern Ireland to develop a lifelong love of books, offering millions of families the chance to discover the joy of sharing stories, books and rhymes together. This year, a free, specially-commissioned All Aboard! booklet, is gifted to families at events. Colourful illustrated posters, stickers and Rhymetime sheets were available at the event in Ammanford.

Rhodri Glyn Thomas and Jonathan Edwards said:

“We were very pleased to support the event in Ammanford which saw a number of babies and toddlers enjoy the colourful books.

“The event was an excellent opportunity to promote the benefits of reading and to provide a forum for parents and grandparents to meet new people with very common interests.

“Reading a book with your child or grandchild is not only an important part of family life, but it can also be the most pleasant.  The event was undoubtedly a success and we look forward to many more events taking place in the future.
