Grants Awarded to County Post Offices

For Immediate Release:
3 Local county post offices have are to be awarded grants from the Assembly as part of its Post Offic3e Diversification Fund. 41 post offices throughout Wales will share over £725,000 with Penygroes, Llangadog and Llandovery in the Carmarthen East and Dinefwr constituency named amongst them. Rhodri Glyn Thomas AM and Jonathan Edwards MP have welcomed the news as a much needed boost to local services.

Rhodri Glyn Thomas AM said:

“I am absolutely delighted that there are local post offices benefiting from this round of grants. The post office network in Wales, and especially here in Carmarthenshire, has taken a hit over the past few years. Labour’s closure programme saw numerous services lost and communities left isolated. It is therefore vitally important that we ensure that where there are provisions they are given all the support possible to continue the hugely important role they have.

Very often post offices are more than just a shop but the heartbeat of our towns. I am sure that being given a financial boost through these Assembly grants will help out the Penygroes, Llangadog and Llandovery services.”

Jonathan Edwards MP added:

“These grants are designed to help post offices diversify their business and expand the services they are able to offer. Hopefully the money will be able to allow these three post offices to continue to offer excellent community services and get more people using local post offices.”

The Post Office Development Fund provided £4.1 million in capital grants to 99 sub-post offices in Wales between 2002 and 2004.

The Post Office Diversification Fund was launched in December 2008, committing £4.5 million from 2008-2011. All sub-postmasters/mistresses in Wales can apply for capital grants of up to £5,000 for small projects; capital grants of up to £20,000 for larger projects; and/or revenue grants of up to £15,000.

In the first two funding rounds of the Post Office Diversification Fund, 140 Post Offices received a share of £2.7 million. Under this latest round, 41 Post Offices will share £726,690.02.
