Council Ignore Parents Concerns with Special School Closure

A local Assembly Member has written to Carmarthenshire County Council highlighting his disappointment at the lack of consultation with parents over the decision to close Whitemill Special School in Nantgaredig. Parent’s have been left very disappointed that not only were they not informed of the proposals to close the building they have also been refused a meeting with the authority. Rhodri Glyn Thomas AM has now written to the council requesting that a meeting be held and has called for greater consultation with those involved to help move the issue forward.

Rhodri Glyn Thomas AM added:

“This announcement is hugely disappointing. I am very disturbed that parents and carers were not even given prior notice of the council’s intentions. My office has been in contact with those affected and I have written to the council highlighting their concerns.

It has been outlined to me that parents have requested a meeting with the local education authority which was refused. I find that totally unacceptable. I have stated on a number of occasions that in order to make sure that changes to educational needs in the county are successful those affected, parents and teachers, need to be involved in the consultation process. Marginalising them in this manor will only lead to greater tensions.”

Plaid‘s Westminster candidate Jonathan Edwards said:

“Parents at the school have nothing but praise for the teaching staff and are naturally worried that their children could now be split up from their friends or from those teachers that they have come accustomed to dealing with. The Whitemill school building is in need of repairs, but surely the best way to move this issue forward would be to ensure that everyone is informed of the developments, and consideration is given for how those changes will impact on the day to day lives of the children involved.”
