AM and MP respond to Council Leader comments on Sainsbury’s developments

Responding to the comments of Councillor Kevin Madge, Jonathan Edwards MP and Rhodri Glyn Thomas AM said:

“This latest politically motivated statement from the Council’s taxpayer-funded press office will be a slap in the face for the many scores of residents and traders of Carmarthenshire who have contacted us in opposition to the Sainsbury’s developments.

“The comments of Councillor Madge, in a joint statement with the developer, leave no room for doubt that this Labour and Independent County Council is in the pocket of big business. We however will always put the interests of our constituents first and Plaid Cymru will always prioritise our small independent enterprises as they are the backbone of the Welsh economy.

“The Council’s economic strategy is laughable and has so far consisted of using taxpayers’ money to buy land but absolutely no plans to deliver jobs.

“As elected members we have requested on behalf of many constituents that the applications be called in so that a number of planning issues can be considered. The decision to call-in applications is ultimately for the Labour Government Minister, John Griffiths, to take.

“It is a disgrace that the Council Leader should put out a press release with the developer attacking elected members for representing their constituents. Cllr. Madge is clearly out of touch with the people of the county he is supposed to be leading.”
